These days I try to do what it says on the tin: dream, write, read, repeat. It's a pretty good formula and the writing part is something so far under my skin I can't even begin to know how I'd get rid of it.
I remember speaking at a school about the writing process and the kids wanted to know if I had always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. It wasn’t something I could answer with a simple yes, which I think some of them found reassuring. But I could say that I had always wanted to make cool stuff happen. And happily, I can say that that pretty much sums up my entire career. I write novels, short stories for kids and adults, radio plays, video scripts and now I’m lucky enough to have a feature screenplay in development. But I also live in New Zealand where making a living as a full-time writer is almost as rare as finding a unicorn under a four leaf clover, so sometimes I also write copy and advertorials, pen press releases, magic up blog posts, review books, teach creative writing for kids and adults and I’ve even been a guest writer and token female comedian panelist on a cruise ship. If you have a project you’d like to make happen but can’t quite find the words, do drop me a line. I might just be able to help make your cool stuff happen too. |
